Imprint Grammar Guidelines
The following suggestions may help you when wording card and envelope imprints.
When titles are used, the husband’s title should come rst:
Rev. and Mrs. Aaron J. Brown Hon. and Mrs. Aaron J. Brown Mr. and Dr. Aaron J. Brown Mr. and Mrs. Aaron J. Brown This style is commonly used on envelope imprints.
Without title, the wife’s name should come rst:
Vivian and Ed Adams
This style is more commonly used in card imprints.
Children’s names should be listed according to age, oldest rst. Children’s names can be added on a separate line below either of the above styles:
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Adams Donna and Bruce Zipoli
Jason and Jennifer Jackie, Gina Rose and Kevin
When the family is listed in series, the father’s name should come rst, then the wife’s name, then the children:
Ed, Vivian, Jason and Jennifer Adams
The family name can also be listed rst:
The Zipoli Family
Bruce, Donna, Jackie, Gina Rose and Kevin
A comma should always precede Jr., III and other suf xes:
Aaron J. Brown, Sr. Aaron J. Brown, junior Owen Lee Fox, III Vivian Adams, Ph. D.
For a widow or married woman:
Mrs. Dominic d’Angelo or Sylvia d’Angelo
When listing names in series, a comma is needed between each name unless they are separated by the word ‘and’: John, Mary Lou, Sean and Brianna O’Malley
A comma or ‘and’ is also needed when the series of names extends to another line:
George, Elizabeth, Melissa, Robert,
Leah Anne, Margot and George, Jr.
A comma is not necessary if the second line is not part of a continuing series: Brookville Dental Clinic
Eugene Gibbs, DMD
Madeleine Stanton, DDS
Symbols and abbreviations will be printed as written:
Mr. & Mrs. John O’Malley 18 Overlook Dr. Beverly Hills, CA 90212
Addresses may look more formal written out:
The O’Malleys
18 Overlook Drive Beverly Hills, California 90212
200 Lakeview Drive Grosse Pointe Farms Michigan 48236
Use of Plurals
When names end in ‘s’, ‘x’, ‘z’, ‘ch’ or ‘sh’, add ‘es’:
Adams = Adamses Fox = Foxes Rodriguez = Rodriguezes Ivanovich = Ivanoviches Welsh = Welshes
When names end in ‘i’, ‘o’, ‘y’ or ‘th’, add ‘s’:
Zipoli = Zipolis d’Angelo = d’Angelos O’Malley = O’Malleys Smith = Smiths
For names ending with any other letter, add ‘s’ only.
Only use an apostrophe to show ownership, never to form a plural:
Happy Holidays from The Browns (not The Brown’s) Come to the Browns’ ski lodge (not the Brown’s) Meet at Joan Brown’s ski lodge
In many cases the plural form of a name is not desirable. Using the word ‘Family’ may look and sound better: The d’Angelo Family The Rodriguez Family
